Transfer case woes

new to me rig with a long list of things to work on.

E350
7.3 330k
quigley conversion

first snow I was excited to test out my quigley van. but nothing. no 4 wheel drive

Had a shop check it out. what they found was intersting I thought. so I wanted to share. not sure how common it is.

there is a plate that the fork uses as a guide. its attatched to one of the cases at the bottom part that would be away from the fork. (not sure its front or back of the cases)

well on my case it was loose. and I guess there is no way to tighten it. the shop had to find another case. this kept the the fork from engaging.

I also had them put in new bearings cause they were already in there. I also hope that this fixes my issue of lack of 4 wheel drive. dont have funds for hubs right now.

is this common with out transfer cases??? just curious.
case is a BW1356 manual (I think) or something like that.

It is common with the BW1356.

Everybody else with 7.3L F250's and F350's have the New Venture transfer case. Either the NV271 (manual) or the NV273 (ESOF electronic).

IMHO, the BW1356 never should have been installed in the van 4x4 conversions. It is fine in my Bronco, but too weak for a one ton diesel vehicle. But it was used because the tail piece has the connector for the speedo to talk to the PCM (?).

When I have the time and funds I plan to swap mine out for a NV273 and also swap out the narrow van semi-floating rear axle (which requires spacers to match the track of the wider F250/350 front axle) for a wider F250/F350 full-floating rear axle (full-floaters are stronger and have more locker options) which also has the needed connection for the speedo.

If you want to swap out your BW1356 but keep your van rear axle, Chris at http://www.ujointoffroad.com/ has a computer attachment which will take the place of the tail piece speedo connector and allow you to use the New Venture transfer case.

Well I was going to send you a couple links, but after reading this post I realized it was not the same case and would do you no good.

wow, thanks Tim. I figured someone had to know something about it.

can't afford a different case at this time.

shop knows a machinist that is going to sleeve that peice for an extra $150.

unless I found something almost now I might as well press on. they might have it done tomorrow.

by chance do you know how much that adapter is to use the different transfer case? saw what I think your talking about on his site "TC100 for $639)
also I didn't realize the axle's were different widths

and on goes the funds into my van

if you look at part # 36. that is the piece that has loose and folds away from the fork part.

thanks for the link, but that also brought a slightly depressing thought. the years mostly on that list was 87-97. only one kit on that states my year of van 00.

oh the joys. had a good talk with the shop and he answered more of my questions that were sparked by Tim.

no funds for changing out to a NV case. so as long as I dont tow any houses or go rock crawling. I should be find for a long time.

by then I will have a new van or truck by then.

thanks for the link Payson

Easy to see that if #36 is loose the shift fork cannot work properly.
That's where the manual T-case shifter attaches, right?

Nice to have an exploded view.

MTDewX:

See UJointOffroad.com at the following link:

4x4 Van Conversion kits

Also see the pdfs which I have attached for you.

Chris Stubner at UJointOffroad has a saying which I have sadly learned after paying big bucks to have my van converted to 4x4 by a "professional" conversion company:

"Do it nice, or do it twice."

I am in the process of redoing everything. In my case, my BW1356 started slipping out of gear going downhill (on ice). It was the plastic bushings on the shifter forks. It also had a leak in the tail piece which is a known issue. The converter "fixed" the problem under warranty which lasted for one year and then they went bankrupt.

If you are going to keep your BW1356, may I suggest that you: 1. Talk to Chris about how to have it rebuilt properly; 2. Use a reputable shop; and 3. Get at least a 3-year written parts and labor warranty and if they won't, why would you want to rebuilt it?

dam. he also has a 39 gal tank coming. that would be nice cause I am about to do the hutch/harpoon mod, but am afraid of the inside of the tank being jacked up anyway. new tank would be much better and give me more range

I would rather (if I could do it better) but for now decided to just get this one rebuilt. the machinest should be able to sleeve that loose fitting area on my current case. new bearings and all that jazz should give me peace of mind for a while. the van has 330k on the clock and body has lost of rust. so plan is to get it running good mechanicly. finish the inside with insulation and set up how I like. which can change from time to time as I use the van more. i jsut dont have the funds to upgrade at this time. making due with what I have and when I do have buy parts I do spend the extra funds to make it right. hoping I dont have to do it over again. I am a full believer of doing it right the first time.

local shop seems good. got refered from some one else. and with out long talks of trucks I think they will treat me right. we shall it all goes when I get my rig back.

BW 1356 T-Case:

yes, thanks for the link and pic. easier to explain what I am talking about than me babbling.

that part is only attached at teh bottom. that is where the machinist is going to add a sleeve cause its part of the casing of the case. all the other cases the shop had were loose. guess its a common problem in the BW1356.

mine was so loose that the fork part was slipping off the guide that keept it from working properly.
