Goooooooooood Afternoon.
I am trying to figure out what transfer case will interchange into
a 1988 F-250, 7.3L non turbo 5 speed manual trans.
I went to Pick N Pray in sparks today. I found TONS of transfer cases.
But Only 1 7.3. But it was only 2 wheel drive. What years will work
and so on. I hope I have been clear enough, to understand.
Thanks a million!
jugeing buy this post u got ur truck have u thought about a rebuild kit its cheaper then a new t case i think u shoud a np205 out of a older ford is my chose thats what iam doing
When you drive in 4x4 on ground that has good traction, getting the transfer case out of 4x4 usually takes backing up to reduce the driveline windup.
With both driveshafts installed, truck in 4x4 and the front hubs locked in, if you drove on pavement or a concrete surface and made any direction changes at all I will garantee the driveline is wound up and you will break the shift lever off the transfer case before it comes out of 4x4.
With clutch problems, you may be replacing a transfer case that is just fine.
In a perfect world you would have 4 identical size tires on a 4x4.
I have set tires of the same size, same brand and same tire line on the ground beside each other when they were brand new.
Finding two with the exact same height, is rare.
So now when in 4x4, you have all four tires locked together.
In theory with the perfect four tires you should be able to drive in a straight line without the driveline binding up.
But it don't work that way.
Sterling uses a 3.55 gear ratio, Dana uses a 3.54 ratio.
So even if the tires are identical, the axle ratios are not and the driveline loads up.
Even worse, if you turn the front wheels to make a turn, now all four tires are traveling different distances around the corner.
The driveline loads up even more.
Under these conditions something has to break.
Hopefully the tire loses traction and breaks loose before an axle or gears do, but that is not always the case.
No the shifter moves just fine, But the gears inside the transfer case
dont do anything, meaning, the shifter says 4 high, But in reality
you are in 4 low. Put it in 2 high and you are STILL in 4 low

I assume you got under the truck and looked at the transfer case shift rod while someone in the cab worked the shifter? Just to make sure the linkage hasn't come loose, which may be a easy cheap fix.
An NP205 will bolt up to, you just have to grind 2 of the webs off the case to make room for the shift lever. Also, imho, the 205 is the best t-case ever built
I had one that I got back from the Tranny shop after having a flex-plate installed and the idiots had hooked the linkage upside down, so you had to pull the stick all the way back to get to 2 high, then up some was 4hi, then neutral, and thats as far as it would go, I did n't have 4 lo. I would take the linkage off and see if the bolt that the linkage moves will move any.
