Gauge and overheating problems

I have a 1987 f150 with an inline 6 300 I had electrical issues and traced it back to the battery cables so I replaced them. After I did that the water temp gauge went from reading 210 at max when running it went up to 210 - 250 more torward 250 and I have started smelling something burning. Does anybody know what might be causing it? The gauge is after market and it has an aftermarket sensor too. The oil pressure gauge also started to read higher than before any ideas what could be causing that? It's also after market. The burning smell I previously mentioned definitely isn't oil.

since you are experiencing problems with two gauges, i'm wondering if maybe your voltage regulator has quit working properly, and the alternator is generating more than the usual 14.5 volts.

i'd be checking that with a voltmeter- quickly.

This won't address the varience in the gauge readings, but make sure the ground cable is not resting against the exhaust pipe or manifold.
