My blower motor makes this waaaaail whenever I turn it on. It started a couple winters ago, only doing it when I'd hit a bump, started happening more and more often, and now I almost can't run my heater without it happening. I'm assuming it's the fan rubbing on the shroud.
Where is the heater/defroster blower? Is it some of what I see up under the dash, or is it the thing on the passenger side firewall? How do I remove/access it?
If anyone's had this problem before, can I get away with just lubing it? Or just switching in a new fan, or bearing, or?
If you had add on air then you should still have the factory heater. The blower motor sticks through the firewall on the passenger side.
To change the blower motor you need to drop the heater plenum from under the dash. Normally that's not a big deal, it's attached to the firewall with three nuts, but add on air complicates things because you usually have to drop that unit out of the way to get to the heater.
The big hole between the two yellow squares is where the blower motor sticks out. The three yellow squares show the three nuts that attach the heater plenum to the firewall.
If you had add on Economy air then you should still have the factory heater. The blower motor sticks through the firewall on the passenger side.
But if the OP has Deluxe dealer installed A/C, it's combined with the heater.
OP: Economy A/C is not combined with the heater, has a separate blower motor for the A/C. The two A/C switches are located within a panel that also contains two registers.
This panell fits into the dash to the left of the glovebox.
Couple geniuses figuring out my mysteries to a T, as usual! Dummy, by your description, it sounds like I have the economy A/C.
Mike, I have what looks like a blower motor, right there where you indicate it should be. I'll have to check for the 3 nuts. There's something inside my cab very nearly in the same area as those 3 mounts, but I'm not sure if it's just the heater plenum, or if it's some remnant of an old A/C.
Either of you know what should be going on down there between me and the heater, if I do indeed have Economy A/C? Would it be held on at just those 3 points, or more?
Here's an exploded diagram of the heater. That would be the only thing held on by the three screws. If there is an A/C unit stuck up under the dash, it will be attached in some other way.
While you have the heater out, now would be a good time to change the heater core too.
If you're not using the A/C unit you could also leave it out rather than puting it back in
