substantial fuel leak while running

I lost about 8-10 gallons of fuel on a 250 mile trip this past holiday weekend. It is a steady drip/stream coming down the bellhousing only while the engine is running. I tried to find the location of the leak by turning the key to on, but could not locate the leak, nor would it leak Granted it was 2 degrees out and i did not spend a whole heck of a lot of time. The area below/behind the fuel bowl is filled with fuel.

I have tried to search as to the cause, but i only find answers to when the truck is turned off. I was leaning towards a fuel bowl rebuild, but i suspect that i should not be streaming that much fuel from a failed o ring, or could I? I am thinking it might be a fuel line...

My whole underside is coated in diesel and now my VSS sitch is malfunctioning as well (no speedo/abs light on/ oD button flashing). Nothing beats a $50 undercoating job! I am not too worried as i can clean and or replace the switch.

Is this a good time to do the FRX as well, because it might help find a leak and it is a mod. i also have to address the turbo surge, so I am going to be spending some $$ soon.

I would definitely check the fuel lines for possible leaks, both at connections and along lines. The fuel bowl lid could be suspect as well. I had a cut gasket on mine and it was blowing fuel everywhere. I purchased a new gasket and cure that issue. If you are doing all this fuel line chasing, it might be a good time to rehab the fuel bowl and all the o-rings that go in it. Another possibility is the fuel bowl drain, could have let go. The fuel bowl rehab is not hard and would put your mind at ease. Both Bob and Clay have the kit for the fuel bowl rehab.

I think I read of a return(supply line as corrected below, thanks) fuel line rubbing thru where it is attached with a metal clamp. I think it is on the back of the head on the passenger side. Line replacement was required.

Check post # 7 here for some ideas.

You might take a flashlight and look underneath the passenger side tube to the turbo. You might be able to see the leak there. I just did a wrap on the line to stop the chafing from happening.

its the supply line on the pass. side rear of head.
55+ psi can make a fuel soaked mess in a hurry when that dang line wears thru.
just replaced one that i cought weeping... just before a major rupture... vally was still a total mess.

the rubber return line going into the tank can also dry rot and leak like crazy... luckily mine leaked immediately after finishing my hutch mod instead of on the road somewhere...

I am not going to have a chance to look at the truck again till the weekend. Forecast of 20's with sun should make it bearable. The passenger line rupture makes sense to me, but i think I'm going to rebuild the fuel bowl as well. Who carries the passenger side line (if needed). Any difficulties removing/installing the new fuel line?

While I have that part of the engine apart, any suggested mods? i think I may do the FRX, but I am wondering if the $180 spent is worth it.

Thanks for the input from all.

.

I got mine from Riff raff diesel and just did it today. Not bad. Here is a link to a thread that I read trying to get a guesstimate on time before i did it. Its really talking about replacing the sleeve but it covers replacing the line since the sleeves are on the end.

On my truck there was a hard fuel line that went across the valley by the IPR valve. The tin nut on the IPR valve actually wore a slit in the line. It looked like someone hit it with a highspeed. I will try and find a pic of it.

OK I found my old thread it has some pics and a part number to that line. Was $23 when I bought it. If that ends up being your problem

I'm having the same problem with the fuel line. I ordered all my stuff from dieseloring.com. I am rebuilding the turbo, installing a WW, rebuilding the fuel bowl and replacing the fuel line while I have it apart.

I just removed everything this morning, it took me about 2 1/2- 3hrs to remove the intake, intercooler tubes, turbo, and fuel bowl. I still have to replace the line and remove the turbo pedistal.

fuel leak update

It turned out both sleeves were bad on the passenger side fuel line. I had ordered a new fuel line from Clay and just installed it. Didn't rebuild the fuel bowl, just the drain valve assembly. replaced the VSS and she was good to go.
