2013 Knee-deep BS thread!
Probably going to have a sad task on the schedule for the day. Our 17 year old half wolf/half Shepard is having some serious paralyzed type problems with his rear end. My wife and I have been talking and we have come to the conclusion that it is probably time for the final trip to the vet. I don't think the vet has any miracles left up his sleeve.............................
I feel your pain here.
My hunting and fishing partner called (I think my wife might have talked to him) and I guess we'll go salmon fishing in the morning..................................... tomorrow will be brighter.
So I spent a couple of months helping him up each time he wanted to.
One day he lay in the hallway and wouldn't respond at all to even me assisting. He was completely limp and virtually unresponsive.
Rushed him to the vet's, but the vet told me he felt fluid in his abdomen, and it meant likely a liver or spleen tumor had suddenly burst.
It's quite common in dogs, as we had a big old Golden go the same way on Christmas Day, 2000. They go from normal to virtually dead in hours, so it's not a long and drawn out thing. Fortunately, there's no pain associated with it. Unfortunately, they give you no time to mentally prepare for it.
I believe I only mentioned his passing in my local chapter down here, as some of the guys had met him.
Again, Jim, I know how sad a day this was for you. Catch some fish tomorrow, and take your mind off it for a while.

Boo had been in steep decline for a couple of months and I've been having to help him into the pickup for a couple of years now. His rear quarters just wouldn't work right anymore. Last couple of days I was having to help him up the back stairs into the house. The wife and I were hoping he would pass peacefully in his sleep, but it didn't happen - he was just too much of a fighter. Last night I had to carry him into his bed - but he wouldn't lay down until he had his treat. This morning he was giving it every effort he could, but couldn't do much more than drag his rear quarters. He was loosing control of his bowels and bladder. Jennifer (our vet) said there was nothing more anyone could do for him. At 17 years old he had had a good life and it was beyond time to let go.
We thought we were mentally prepared.......................guess loosing 2 cats and a horse and now Boo in the last six months is just starting to pile up. So much for the tough ole cop and farm boy. Getting too soft in my old age.
Jim sorry to hear about your friend, it is always hard loosing a friend.

Jim, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family tonight. It's one of the hardest things about owning animals... Loosing your best friend.
