replacing power steering pump

I have taken the fan belt off my power steering pump because the pump was squealing like crazy and spewing fluid all over the place. The PO gave me a good used pump when I bought the truck. It looks like a pretty straightforward removal and install.... The replacement pump has a pulley already on it.

Any tips or heads ups I should be aware of before I begin this?

thanks, Abe

Good time to replace the hoses so you don't do work twice.

Inspect the connections on the back of the replacement pump before purchasing and/or installing. Mike makes a good point. I bought new pressure and return lines (made in the USA), and one leaked.

I learned this on my 66 mustang , went through 5 sets of repo hoses , all leaked ended up cleaning my originals and putting back on ... no leaks.

didn't even try repos when i put my 390 in my f100

Why go for repro when you could get some from a good auto parts supplier like NAPA or others. I can vouch for Ford hoses on my 00 Expedition with 158k. They lasted for 13 years at up to -59 parked outside. For good hoses, get some made at an industrial hose shop. That's what we do for "Arctic Grade" hoses here in Alaska. Good for -60.

What kind of power steering fluid should I use? I read somewhere that over the counter PS fluid (like I would buy for a Dodge caravan) is junk for a truck PS like ours? What should I fill it with?

Type F has more of a anti foaming agent in it the other PS fluids. Also is used in the ford auto trans...Some ps pumps had a round filter like 4"x1.5" that was replaceable in them.
It seemed to never get changed. And many people just removed and never put one back in.. orich

Replaced the power steering pump today. It finally got warm enough in Central PA to work outside. Most everything went smoothly. It steers good with no squealing...

Thanks for all your help and advice.
