Today during the snow storm while plowing the brake on my 99 F-350 with 7.3 seem to be haning up. The pedal seems harder than usual, after applying the brakes they dont seem to want to release. I also hear a clicking sound near the brake pedal. All the brakes seemed hot but the front left rotor was almost red hot with smoke. I stopped for a break at that point to let the brakes cool, and it was a little better but still seems like they are "dragging" a little. I am going to replace the LF caliper to see if that is the issue, wondering if it could possilbly be the master cylinder also. Any help would be great, Thanks!
Check pins, should move relatively easily, but if you have the new style lower pins that have the rubber bushing they can be hard to move. I never liked the design and pull them off on the trucks I work on.
Pistons should move in with relative force, more then just your fingers when they get older.
Check that the pads move freely in the brackets. The salt exposure when plowing can generate rust between the stainless slippers and brackets.
When it's all together press on the pedal hard with the motor running, then open the bleeder to see if brake fluid comes out under pressure. If so you could have a brake hose with an internal tear, or the M/C is not returning fully.
With age, some are finding rust between the M/C and hydrobooster not allowing the M/C to return fully, trapping fluid between the compensating port and calipers. Remove the two nuts holding the M/C to the HB and move the M/C forward as best you can against the brake lines. Check for rust buildup.
