I was talking with a coworker the other day and his hobby is Harley Davidsons... modifying them for more performance. We have been sharing our misadventures and he chimes in with "Why do we do this to ourselves?"
I already knew my answer (increased reliability), but I was forced to ponder this question when I reviewed my reasons for bigger injectors. My ultimate goal was lower EGTs when towing a big boat (not purchased as yet), but c'mon... I didn't really need the capability to reach 400 HP with all these mods. I have since focused on tuning Stinky down and making sure everything is 100% operational and reliable, getting back to the original goal. Why? I'm not the only one in the truck. I recently took my grandsons over a mountain pass and my granddaughter for a ride in Da Big Stink in bad weather... and Stinky is a rolling safety cage for the ones I love.
Every car/motorcycle/boat nut modifies or doesn't for their own reasons. Lots do it for more power while others modify for better reliability. Some just try to make the ride smoother and others go all out with lift kits and huge tires. My Pop leaves all his vehicles stock saying the factory knows best. I think that all of us here are trying to get the most out of our trucks, (whatever that person considers “the most”), which is why we are on this wonderful site to begin with. Happy New Years
I want to make mine more efficient and quieter. I have used mine for all of our family vacations where I have to travel any significant mileage. I like the fact that there is a significant amount of iron around the family, in case someone tries to hit us or god forbid, I do something stupid. The truck I drive has been and always will be my favorite travel vehicle, but this year we are going to run the Yukon the wife wanted. It is still a large vehicle, but not as big as my one ton running down the road. A more efficient/quiet truck that can get 18 - 20 miles to the gallon while pulling a load is a goal I may never attain, but the chase is interesting.
Right on Tug, These things do make a good mothership when the family needs hauling.
For now I have requested we wait to be Grandparents, kids are 20 and 25 so we'll see how long that lasts.
We all have goals, for me keeping most of the oil inside is making the most of it. ha
