My son turned 16 last week. Got him a 2001 Ford F150 w/ 128,000. Nice looking truck. Upon delivery there were some issues undisclosed. (Purchased over internet from a dealer in the MLPS area.
1. Back window leaks - needs resealing?
2. Driver/passenger RV mirrows did not work - went to local parts store and it appears the relay was missing. New one put in and still didn't work - probably a switch? Was told it was $200 or more just for part.
3. Check engine light was on - first code was a temp. sensor that we replaced.
Second code is a #8 misfire. Trucks gets horrible gas mileage(?) and has a low
RPM missing/chugging problem at approx. 2200rps. Guessing this may be related to error #8?
4. I bought the little diagnostic computer and it says also that Cat. & Evap. systems are "not ready". Is that related to anything else?
Kind of sucks b/c it is his first vehicle and I can see how bummed he is about these issues. We do need to also get an emissions test completed which at this point it appears that it will fail. I have also read on this post about the SB relating to the #7/#8 plug wires and have no idea if that is a problem here. Have also read about the plug changing issues w/ these Fords and that scares the crap out of me. I have no service records for vehicle but it did check out well on car fax and vehicle check - or whatever the other service is called. Dealer says Truck was purchased "as is". I'm stuck between a rock and hard place here. Any suggestions? Got a great deal on the truck (or did I) but it looks like i am going to give it all back and then some w/ these issues. New to this thread as of today. Thanks for your help. Lot of smart folks on this thread. I'm not car smart yet. rjs
You should have never bought this truck on such terms.
The missing cylinder may have taken out the cats on the driver side.
If so your in for quite some expense in addition to the other problems.
I base this on the cat diagnostics not being complete.
I hope it's not the case for you.
Might as well go through all the issues now so you know what you have after it's all done and keep the truck long enough to get the investment back.
The motor has 8 coils.
Remove the #8 and the plug for inspection.
If the plug looks ok, the coil may be the problem.
In your replies always give the codes because your already showing you may be mis interpeting them.
Good luck.
Cylider # 8 is the furthest back from the front on the drivers side. There is a good chance it is filled with water ( the plug hole) and it takes a Looooooong time to dry it out if you don't blow the water out. Don't be afraid of getting to the plug and taking it out. It looks worse than it really is. Get that issue solved, then with it running right you can move on. Back window leak is common, I just put a bead of silicon across the top 6 years ago...never leaked again. Don't worry about the cats until you get that miss taken care of. We don't have emission testing here in Minnesota, so not quite sure what you meant by that. Good Luck....and take one step at a time. Don't post the name of the place you bought it, buy I am curious what part of the cities it came from.
thanks for your responses. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately my son cleared the codes so i did not have the exact number.
I live in WI - vehicle was purchased from a smaller MLPS car dealer based on the recommendation of the sales guy from the dealership. I know - clearly my mistake. I will not name the dealer at this point. North or MLPS. i would like to give them a chance to respond and hopefully make some of this right. I researched the dealership tonight and found a minimum of 15-20 other posts from individuals that have had problems with this dealership. There are also 5 complaints on the better business bureau website. So it is my fault for not properly researching this dealership beforehand I was under the gun due to impending 16th birthday and showed very poor judgement.
Thanks for any feedback. This is a very helpful site.
01 mod engine ? Should be cop igniton . blow out cyl hole with compressed air before pulling plug , Change plug and coil ( to be safe ). Replace boot if you don't replace coil assy. Good luck . Torque plug properly or you will be sorry !
The rear window has a bytle (rubber) ring around the glass and glued to the cab wall. The ring is not sealed well, normally above the rear window on drivers side. There is a thread to this, but you pop out the molding on the inside of the cab and get to a dozen screws that bolt the glass to the cab wall. Push the window out into the bed area, install new bytle kit from Auto Zone and reinstall. Takes under 2 hours.--- Most ignition miss are the COP, but considering this is #8, i would check for moisture in teh hole as the guys say. You might just install the COP and not pull the plug. COP is much easier. The COPS is $55-90 at auto parts stores. You can get a 8 pack on e-bay for $100.
The "Not Ready" codes are normal under the fault conditions you described. You'll have to solve that misfire problem before those tests can execute. If you're up north, the evap test probably won't run until spring.
