Hey im lookin at a 79 f250 4x4 with no rust and original paint. The guy says it has a stock 429 and 4 speed. He wants 4600 for it.

No. They only had 351's & 400's for V8's.

not factory in a 4x4 / 4spd,, maybe by stock he means that the engine hasn't had any work done,, not the same as "original".

4x4's didn't come with the 429 or 460. If it's a stock truck, then it's either a 351 or 400.

The only difference between a 429 and a 460, is the stroke. The 429 has a shorter stroke than a 460. Everything else is the same. No trucks came with 429's, only 460's. There would be no way to tell just by looking at it.

Now if you want to know if its a 351/400 or a 429/460, look at the valve covers.

351/400

429/460

The guy is clueless, there is no such thing. 429 = 1968/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars ONLY!

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code: 1977/79 F150/250 4WD, 1979 F350 4WD:

B = 300 I-6 was standard equipment / H = 351M & S = 400 were optional (have 8 valve cover bolts per side).

No 460's came with a manual trans or 4WD until 1983, and then in F250/350's only. 429/460's have 7 valve cover bolts per side.

Looks like the ad just means a stock, unmodified 429 and not that the engine is "stock" to the truck
