Looking for a quick idea. Anyone have any hints and tricks on how to bolt AND TORQUE down a flywheel to an engine?
The issue I'm quickly running into is that the engine spins. There's nothing to brace it against, or that I can think of to keep it still.
I don't know about the loc-tite thing. I would thing any general bolt locker would work but don't take my word for it. Have you tried placing a socket on the front crank shaft nut and putting an extension on there to jam it onto something? Maybe the frame or somewhere near it. When i was having my tranny rebuilt i tried to take the flywheel off to see the rear main seal but i couldn't get the bolts loose. At the time i didn't have a working impact gun and couldn't get enough leverage to loosen them. I am kinda glad cause i wouldn't have been able to torque them back down.
Screw in one of the bellhousing bolts to the engine block and use it as a leverage point to brace a pry bar that is in between two of the teeth on the wheel.

That's not a bad idea but is the risk of breaking a tooth worth it? Seems too risky.
if those teeth are strong enough to handle a starter gear spining them thousand upon thousand of times in the life of the motor i think they can handle a pry while you torque a few bolts. its tougher than you might think
This is what I ultimately ended up doing. It worked very well.
Bolted the fan pulley on backwards and then braced a wrench against it with a socket on the crank. I highly recommend it.
