Pulled inspection cover off tranny last night and the flywheel is shot. Was wondering if its possible to change flywheel without removing crossmember and tranny.I have little time to do this job and want to cut any coners I can.Truck is a 79 F150 300-6,auto.Thanks for any help.
As far as I know, there is no way to change the flexplate without either pulling the engine or the transmission. Pulling the engine is sometimes the easier route, especially with 4x4 models. In your case, you are probably better off to pull the transmission back out of the way. Good luck.
Rok,
Try unbolting the driveshaft and crossmember and bellhousing bolt and flywheel to torque converter bolts. Then slide the tranny back until it hits the firewall. Then reach up in there and break the flywheel bolts loose with a breaker bar. You'll have to get someone to hold the flex plate still with a prybar or large screwdriver. It will be tight but, you can do it, maybe.
Good Luck, Have Fun,
