Hey guys I am going to be taking my 63 f100 in to have the tranny checked and I wanted to get some advise before I go. Its a 3-on-tree and seems to run ok all though I do get some strange driveline noise when i let off the gas while still in gear in 3rd at higher speed. I put 3.25 gears on after having 3.89 and seems to be running great and doesn't bog down near as much as I thought for it being a 223. My question is this > What can I UPGRADE on this tranny? Its all original but its my DD so should I do new clutch? clutch plate? bearings rings? Should I ask for a certain type of rebuilt to accommodate my engine and gearing set up? Thanks guys... in case you can't tell I am addicted to my truck and this forum. HAHA happy holidays
You might consider putting in the R11 optional overdrive unit. In my opion Its The best option Ford did to improve the performance of a manual truck.
A big difference in fuel consumption as well as highway speed drivability.
It would seem to me that your changing rearend gearing from 3.89 to 3.25 was instead of adding an overdrive. I would not think you could profit from an overdrive as well as the gearing change. But good luck with whatever you do.
Hi SuperSabre yes you are correct I am good to go at the moment for at least keeping up with the freeway speeds. My truck trans I believe to be in need of some love. Feels like I am pulling an anchor sometimes and I just want to be armed with all the knowledge I can before going to the trans shop.
The overdrive unit was a option you ordered from ford. The Borg Warner R11
was used on pickup trucks R10 Was used on passenger cars.they bolted right onto the transmission where the standard tail shaft bolted on. I found a good one in a 1965 f100 with 352 and 3 spd. I love it. I found another one in a 66
but just gave it away to a friend. there in some junk yards but the solenoid and relay switches are always missing and hard to come by. I have a couple
of solenoids and relays still lying around. They used these in studebaker, ramblers, etc. It might seem like a hassle but this OD units are well
worth the trouble. I have couple of pics I can send to you

As original, Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh transmission, introduced in 1963. This is a simple trans to rebuild, all the parts are readily available.
You cannot use the Warner T-85N 3 speed overdrive with a 223 engine. This trans was an option for 1965/71 F100's with 240/300/302/352/360/390 engines.
1961/64 F100 223/292's offered the Warner T-86 3 speed overdrive, but parts are slim and none.
T-86 overdrive relays are almost non existant (not the same as T85's that are non existant!), as are kickdown switches, O/D cable. The wiring harness will have to be found used.
The only O/D relay that has been reproduced (by Studebakers West in Redwood City CA) is the 6V relay. No 12V relay is reproduced.
