First, the truck is a 92 F150 with the 300 and a M5OD manual with 4wd.
What is happening, I am getting a howl and grinding noise when I go down the road, and a clicking noise at low speeds (only about 10 miles put on the truck like this). When I press the clutch in, the noise goes away, I can rev it and the motor sounds fine, not unusual noises. The noise is only when the truck is moving, but not when the clutch is in.
I was thinking that rules out the front and rear diff as they would make noise if it was moving whether the clutch was in or not, Right??
You can feel and hear the grind as you let off the clutch and it seems to be harder to start out now.
Any thoughts on what it is??
Any suggestions for repair or replacement?
How feasably is putting an automatic in its place?

It might be the clutch disc, pressure plate, or the pilot (throwout) bearing going out on you. I would check those first, and I would not swap in an auto. I would get a T-18 or NP435 instead, that's if you don't want overdrive.
I could probably get away without an overdrive. I currently have 3.08 gears and run at 2500rpm at 70mph in 4th. I never use the overdrive unless I am on the Interstate.
I have read something about a ZF transmission. Is this any cheaper M5OD? Does this one bolt right in? What about the other two types (T-18 and NP435)
The ZF is much more expensive than the Mazda, and the others.
You need to remove the clutch to check it and the throwout bearing. The Haynes or Chilton repair manuals will explain things better. THere's some troubleshooting and tips for types of wear to look for. It should be obvious from there.
I am preparing for the worse, hoping for the best. The tranny is comming out next week (not to hopefull as it has 190,000 miles on it and the syncros have been going for a while) and I will procceed from there as to whether it is the tranny or clutch.
I found a couple M5OD for $600-$700
I also found a T-18 for $250 plus exchange. The wrecker said he would do a strait swap for the cross members.
What else would I need to switch out to make it work?

hey..mine did the same thing this week...your transfer case is going out!. don't drive it any more than you have to. im now looking for a used one. you may can rebuild yours if its not too far gone. when it finally goes.....you'll probably be stuck in neutal. ScottnTexas
Couleeman, that's also a strong possibility, I didn't notice that your's was 4wd. The T-18 was still used in the 90's models, so it should be an easy swap. You might have to modify your existing shift linkage or get the one from the T-18 for your transfer case, that should be a B-W 1356 in the 92. Best bet is to rebuild your t-case if needed, but swap the tranny if it's bad. May be able to work with the wrecker dude, and get some help from him.
ScottnTX, I don't recall what year model your's is, possibly a B-W 1345 or NP208. It sounds like your chain broke or the pump died. Hope it didn't detonate and ruin the housing. My ad is in the 87-96 Bronco section of the classifieds if you need a B-W1356. Check with Johnny Franks Auto Parts in Houston if you want an older-model t-case. I would swap in a NP205 in your situation and if you can do the work yourself.

Yes my truck is 4wd. Is there any quick troubleshooting tips I can do to determine if it is the transfer case.
When you say swap the tranny, do you mean swap for the same M5OD, or swap to a T-18?
If is is for the T-18, the wrecker here told me he would get everything together that I needed to make the swap. He was just having troubles finding the linkage for the Transfercase.
Another question is, will the T-18 shifter fit in the same hole that is in the floor of my truck?
Yet another question, I have switched out an automatic transmission before, but never a manual. Is this something that I should be attempting myself or should I pay then neighbor to take care of it? Are any special tools required?
Thanks for all your help so far and I apologize if it seems I am slow to understand the whole situation. It is just one of those money tight deals this time so I can't mess around.
You can check the shift linkage on the t-case to be sure it's not mis-aligned and if it will shift into 4hi and 4lo. Yes, I mean swap the T-18 for the M5OD, and it should fit in your truck. I think a manual tranny replacement is easier than an auto. You might want to use a transmission jack to help you out.
I hope this helps you out, anything you do yourself in terms of troubleshooting or repairs saves $60-$80/hour that a shop will charge you for labor plus all of the downtime while it's in there getting "fixxed". MY opinions on trannies and t-cases may vary from yours and other folks', so try to get as much info as you can on what will work best for you. I like to work towards making evrything as bulletproof as practical on a budget. Good Luck!
