try cleaning the IAC (little silver canister looking thing on the RIGHT side of the throttle body as you look at it with wires hooked to it.) Buy a haynes manual, it has the procedure for pulling the codes. Buy the manual at 12 bucks instead of a 25 dollar code reader that you DO NOT need. You have a check engine light so you can use it instead of the code reader.

My 1990 Mustang 5.0 developed a surge at idle last summer. I couldn't figure out what was wrong - no apparent vacume leaks, etc - so I took it to a garage I know.
They pluged into the car's computer and there was a code flashing - what they said was the computer simply needed to be "re-set" after it got a bad code or something.
$20 later - its ran great since then.
