Mine did that after I bought it. After having a problem with it at work, another dude at work who used to have a Ranger with the same 2.9L as mine. He said the rough idle was because of a clogged air filter. About a week later I opened the airbox to check it, and the filter was practically black (I'll take a pic of it in a little bit) it was so clogged. I went and bought a new cheapo paper filter and the rough idle has hardly happened since.
Been there done that. Its not the air filter. Its a sensor somewhere down the line. I just don't know which one it is thats causin the problem, and im too cheap to take it in for a scan.

I guess I had a good sensor and bad filter?
Each car has it's own reasons for the same problemos... so... who knows...
I believe that 90 and earlier use the 2 digit code and 91 and later use the 3 digit codes. They are both listed in the above link. The cutoff maybe 92 instead of 91, not sure.
I am assuming you have fuel injection if it is an 86 motor. Does it have the eec-iv computer control system? The computer is located behind the passenger side kick panel and the test harness is behind the airbox under the hood. I believe there is a picture of the connector somewhere on the links for eec-iv. I believe that that test procedure applies to all eec-iv fuel injected engines.
