I have a 05 with 374 miles on it and the engine has been surging at idle. This is happening every ten seconds or so and the increase in RPMs is just noticeable. Doesn’t matter what accessories are on or off…remains very consistent regardless of time or distance. Does anyone have any suggestions?
My 04 PSD was perfectly smooth up to the EBP sensor issues at 14,000 miles. This 05 was barely off of the lot and this surging began.
have you checked your oil level at all on it? Perhaps it's overfilled. I'm no expert but I seem to recall from other posts that having too much oil in the engine may cause this.
This surge has happened to me twice now in about 4 months. Both times, I was coming home from the same resturant that is 5 miles from my house. The first time, I was worried and called up the dealer right away, scheduled a appointment for the next morning. Took it out of the garage that night and it didn't do it. Then yesterday it did it again coming home. I also noticed that I could hear the turbo winding up and backing off when I hit cruising speed. I live 5 miles from town. I took the truck out again this morning and it's acting just fine.
When I took it to the dealer for this, they didn't find any problem and no error codes. They did give me a new flash and asked if I had been using the cruise control. I had not used the cruise control then or yesterday. I just figure at this point, the computer must have been a bit confused???
Rangercd - Have 2,500 Miles And No Surge Problem. Got Down To 34 Yesterday And Everything Started And Ran Ok. Took Delilvery Middle Of August. With The New Flash, Did You Notice Any Difference In The Off The Line Peformance? I Have Used My Truck On Cruise For One Trip And Did Not Notice Any Problems With The Turbo Winding Up, Etc As You Describe.
I had a similar issue on my 04. Some people at FTE suggested having the mechanics check out the EBP sensor. Got it back from the mechanic and they said it was a bad sensor. No surging issues after that.
I originally noticed the surging and turbo variation when in cruise control on flat road. Check around FTE; these guys know what they’re talking about.
Perform the following preliminary checks:
§ Confirm brakes are not dragging.
§ Check for oil in coolant.
§ Check engine oil level.
§ Confirm oil change within 12,070 km (7,500 miles).
§ Check air intake system: Air Filter Minder.
§ Check MAP sensor hose for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
§ Check EBP sensor tube for holes, blockage, or disconnection.
§ Check intake manifold system for leaks.
§ Confirm acceptable SAE oil viscosity and API rating of oil.
§ Check for sufficient clean fuel.
§ Check for air in fuel.
§ Check for intake restriction.
§ Compare loaded weight of vehicle with performance expectations.
§ Power monitor active.
§ Transmission concerns.
I'm beginning to wonder about this 05. I can't hear the turbo in this truck. My 04 stock was very noticeable and even more so with the Banks system, but this truck has me scratching my head. Did they add additional sound dampening on the 05?
I could start a few more threads with the other things I've noticed.
I've got diesel smell in the cab and I'm not talking exhaust smell (had that in the 04), this is raw diesel working it's way into the cab. Seems to happen after taking hard corners most often.
How about this? When the dealer was pulling my truck off the lot for me to buy, he jumped in and started cranking the engine. I ran up on him and could hear him pumping the fuel pedal. Got to the door and yelled, "It's a diesel," he looked at me and said, "so what"? Classic!
Since the accelerator is a rheostat (Accelerator Pedal Position sensor) and there is no cable going to a throttle plate or anything, he may as well been blowing into the intake. I don't think he hurt anything but his credibility.
The turbo has some mods to reduce "flutter" (turbo fart). Perhaps it toned it down. Go drive another 05 on the lot and see if it sounds the same.
I took my truck in for the problem at 2192 miles. I had changed the oil at 2044 miles but after reading here, I only used 13.5 qts and let the truck sit over night before checking and it is mid way between min and max so I'm sure that I'm ok there. I don't see that he checked the EBP but there is a list a mile long of things he did check. The dealer that I go use has a commercial truck center. I did ask if he was a certified tech and was told that everyone in that center is certified... I have to say that I have used them for about 15 years and have no reason to doubt them.
I also know that things can be missed. I drove the truck today and it was fine again. Maybe I need to eat more so the engine has more time to cool off?
My truck has 2898 miles on it now.
This has only happened when I drove 5 miles, stopped for about 30 minutes then went out, started it to drive home the 5 miles.
The other option is just don't go to that resturant any more. Hate to avoid them though. I lost just over 160 pounds eating breakfast for the past year there
