A while ago I installed a Hypertech chip in my 95 F350 w/a 460. I have also done a MSD 6A and the coil. I'm running a FIPK and a MagnaFlow exhaust. To be honest I did not notice anything in any of these mods. Im only running 33's on 4.10's. Am I missing something? Some one said that I should put the stock air box back on and fabricate up RAM air. How about trying another chip? Is it worth looking for more power on the 460 or go to a V10? It is only a weekend driver. It pulls the boat and skis around 2 to three times a month. Thanks for the help.
You're not going to see much with a Hypertech on a 460. Its basically an 87 octane tune that only gives much power at wide open throttle. To get anything significant from a chip you gotta tune for premium fuel. Also, consider the weight of that truck, 40HP ads about 1/2 second to the Lightning in the 1/4 mile... think about the difference 25HP adds to a much heavier truck! You won't get miracles with a premium fuel chip, it would be about the same as the power boost you get from turning the AC off in a compact car.
So it would have been better to do motor mods on the 460 than spend money on the chip. Also sounds as if I should throw the whole chip thing out the window, right?
Yeah, but how many people run 460's w/a Hypertech chip at full throttle. Is it worth keeping in for the impoved firmness of the shift points. Like I said earlier I didn't notice anything from it in the first place.
So your saying that the Diablo chip is probably only going to give about 25hp across all ranges. Your right though, it wont be a big improvement. Is it worth doing? The other I put back on the stock air box. I made a mistake it was not a FIPK it was a filter charger kit I put on. Probably pulling way too much hot air. Going to the lake tomorrow, well see. Sorry for the previous comment thought you were talking about the Hypertech chip.
It will not give 25HP across all ranges, just as a 300HP engine does not have 300HP at all RPMs. It will give an increase of about 8-12% across all ranges with the peak of about 25HP.
Thanks. I take that into consideration. Don't know what I'm going to do yet. Putting back the stock air box did help w/the pinging. Took the Hypertech chip out too, didn't notice it was gone. One more ?. Can you leave the Diablo chip in when you take it to the dealership to be serviced? I know the Hypertech chip does.
Any chip, including the Hypertech, will throw an error code when installed. Its recommended you pull the chip, including a Hypertech. If its a Diablo Delta chip you can switch it to the off position rather than pull it.
