Fuel Heater Element

99 F350 Super Duty hard starts first thing, blue/white smoke upon start up thinking its the fuel heater element. 297000 miles on the truck. Anyone have any idea if thats true? Could it be my glow plug relay? just replaced that about a year and a half ago. Help me out anyone. Need my baby to run good for the rest of hunting season. Quack Honk Bang!

It's not the fuel bowl heater.

Have you tested the GPR and ohmed out the GPs?

No way for me to test it myself at home. I did replace the relay a year or to ago but bought it at O Rileys. Maybe I should replace it with one from International. Had this problem the first time I had to replace it with the hard starts. Didnt think that it would have gone out already

Before you start it dead cold next time use a sturdy screw driver to short across the two large terminals of the GPR for about thirty seconds. This will energize the GPs. See if it starts easier. If it does than the GPR is not operating or the GPR contacts aren't passing the voltage. You should ohm out the GPs before you go "Quack Honk Bang!".

Fuel bowl heater does very little to help cold starts, most guys unplug them due to shorting issues causing no-starts and you'd never even know it wasn't plugged in.

Like these others have stated, I'd suspect the glow plug relay or the glow plugs. They are both fairly easy to test if you have a test light or voltmeter. Would help to have a friend cycling the key for you. The large passenger side post on the relay should have constant 12V power, whether the key is on or not. The larger post on the right, should power up when the key is turned on. If it doesn't, replace the relay, as your glow plugs aren't getting any power. IF you are getting power when the key is turned on, I'd look into the glow plugs needing replaced, might be a couple, might be all of them. If it's one on each side has failed, I'd suggest just replacing all 8. Stick with the Bosch or Motorcraft brand plugs.

I've had Motorcraft OEM relays die after a year or so. These relays work hard so you can't always count on them lasting year after year. It's something you need to monitor. The easiest way is to install a cheap LED indicator light to the large lug on top of the GPR opposite of the one that has the red boot on it. Install the light somewhere on the dash. That will tell you only when the GPR is activated.

For the record: The Wait to Start light is not an indicator of the actual GPR activating or not.
