Fuel heater element

Im new to this site as a memeber, but have used it lots for reference on repairs. Now I need some real help. I have a 99 F350 Super Duty and I believe that the fuel heater element is going bad. Hard starts and the blue/white smoke after start up. (It is getting colder here) So to replace the element, is it necessary to remove the whole fuel bowl or can I drain it and replace the element in place? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
New Guy

drain the bowl and just remove it. you will need a set or torx sockets though

I dont think the heater element is the problem. It sounds like a glow plug issue to me. Most people do not have the element hooked up anymore. How many miles on the truck? Does it start easier when plugged in? any SES light? You might have better luck posting in the 7.3 section https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum31/
