Went to put new r.a. bushings on today.
Should the new bushings fit tight in the r.a. bracket?
Right now the new ones have a little play in the bracket.
Any info would be great.
I'm sorry, I should of been more clearer.
The new bushings do not fit in the r.a. bracket tight.
The forward bushing when installed, has about 1/4 inch play in it,
when seated in the bracket. When installed I can still move the radius arm.

Don't quote me on this since it's been years since I changed the ones in my 79 but I think they expand when you put the nut on them and compress them. Does that make any sense..."They expand when they are compressed "
Anyway have you tightened them up or are you just letting them sit on there? If not tightened then do that and see if the play goes away.
How about what truck you have and what kit # from what OEM/store along with a picture of the part. As an example, what I got from Autozone worked, but, the instructions were wrong. Also, sometimes you have to install the replacement bushings different then you would the stock rubber ones.
Thanks for the replies.
The bushings are made by trw #hb1495k-hd. The truck is a 86 fi50 4wd.
The play in the bushings is about a 1/16 of an inch, guessed at first measurement.
What rrmike says makes sense. Sometimes your brain just doesn't work.
The weird thing is,I replaced these bushings four years ago with the same ones Igot now. The old ones look great.
They are polyurethane. The reason I'm replacing them is, I have this awful creek when I turn at low speeds. I searched this site, and figured r.a. bushings. I don't think thats it. The sound comes from both sides of the truck. Driving me nuts.
Your kingpins/ball joints will make a creaking kinda sound when they get dry. I've had that happen before. It broke a few weeks after it started making that noise.
Not sure if the '86 era trucks have the same problem as the '95 era trucks or not, but the creaking when turning in my '95 was because the rivets holding the front crossmember to the frame were loose. Get under the truck and have somebody turn the wheel back and forth slowly. Watch where the crossmember meets the frame and check for any movement.
Replaced pass. side ball joints last year. Driver side still tight.
The creeking sound comes from both sides of the truck. ( low speed turn and front suspension moving) No noise if suspension is not moving.
I'm thinking the cross member because the rivets are rusted and you can see where the cross member has pushed the dirt and crud away from it. About a 1/16 of an inch.
If the rivets fail, is this dangerous to drive?
Will the engine fall out of the truck?
Having the rivets break would be a bad thing. Remember, the front axles mount to the crossmember too. I drove mine that way for about 10 months after I bought it before I figured out where the sound was coming from. The bigger (and more dangerous) problem I had was the crossmember itself was cracked from the lift kit that was on it. If you aren't a welder, take it to a shop and have them weld the crossmember to the frame.
