In regards to the 8" stacks, I am open to any suggestions....as I have yet to develop a "taste". MBRP boasts great performance numbers with this kit, regardless of tip size. I've never liked stacks before, but I figure this truck is big enough to pull it off...and I have experience with MBRP from my jeep builds. I think 6s would look great, but 8s seem to be more popular around east Texas. Aesthetically, a tiny bit of chrome up top would balance with the chrome at the base, extending only from the lid of the toolbox to the top of the cab, the toolbox remaining black. Sorry. I got off topic on looks for a bit and I'm really looking for performance advice.
As for performance goals, I don't want to do anything crazy.
Just basic mods to improve my daily driver.
I'd like to play a little off road, have power in town, get good mileage on trips, and maybe occasionally pull a basic trailer.
go ahead and do want ya want with the exhaust. No offense, but 8" stacks says alot about your taste...
looking for something a bit more constructive.
Are stacks bad for the 7.3L? Is there an issue with that MBRP product? Does it not perform up to the boasted specs? Or is the exit tip size that is an issue....and if so, is it performance or aesthetics related?
I live in Tyler, but don't mind driving for good work.
If you're wanting to drive and have someone else do the work, which direction do you want to go? Fort Worth or Jasper?

Stacks won't hurt the 7.3. Some would consider the 8" excessive. Stacks that large are strictly for looks, there will be no performance gains from something that large.
YMMV, but...
The flow restriction is measured at the smallest diameter of the pipe, wherever it is. The down pipe from the turbo is restricted to 4in if it follows the designed path, and most aftermarket pipes use a 4in down pipe before larger exhaust.
From there, larger diameter exhaust just allows heat to soak the exhaust pipes due to slower gas flow. This can affect materials and longevity of the exhaust. Generally, you want smooth flow through the pipe at a constant rate. The pipe exit diameter at the tip is for show. I've seen ridiculous 18-24in exhaust tips on 7.3 diesels.
If you put stacks on, make sure they extend 6-8in above the cab roof or you will get soot on the cab. Other than that, stacks have the same result as underbody exhaust pipes.
I have not heard good or bad about MBRP exhaust products, though the best exhaust has low restriction flow (high flow muffler or no muffler / catalytic converter if possible).

There is no performance gain from going to a larger dia exhaust. A straight-piped 3.5" stock exhaust will perform the same as an aftermarket 4" dia exhaust - but the larger the pipe, the more noise it will make. There is likely some benefit to 4" dia after larger injectors and turbo, but beyond 4" is just gonna make more noise. There may even be a loss of performance with very large dia exhaust, since hot gasses flow better than cool gasses - but that's likely splitting hairs even finer than 3.5" vs 4"...
Stacks are strickly for looks. Competition trucks are generally required to have them to mitigate blowing smoke on the track staff and equipment.
I have a MBRP 4" system on my Excursion, its a good product IMHO.
If my comment seemed derogatory, its just because stacks are not my thing and a pair of 8" stacks just look silly to me. I prefer the use of my truck's bed and don't like soot on my cargo and trailers. I do like dual exhaust though.
Sorry to revive an old thread... I have a 7.3L I already have an Edge Evolution CS I like it because of the gauges but I also have the TS Performance 6 position tuner. I was wondering if I can stack them. Use the TS to tune my truck and put the edge on stock and only use it for gauges and monitoring things... On somewhat of a sidenote, does the 7.3 have an EGT sensor? My edge cant monitor that, not even an option. Chip or truck?
Your 2nd post so we will forgive you...
Why not search for stacking programmers. Or create your own topic.
There have been people stack the programmers, but you really gotta be careful. You can hurt things quickly if you accidentally bump it into another setting.
7.3 stock doesn't have an egt sensor. We usually put one in the rear of the drivers side manifold for an aftermarket gauge.

With my old setup, I had a Diablo programmer and an Edge Juice w/Attitude stacked.
I usually had the Diablo on a 40HP tow or 60HP performance tune. Then turn on the Edge to level 2 or 3 if I wanted a little more without a re-flash. I noticed running empty, pulling a hill, the Edge box would constantly pull 60% or more backdown. IMO, it was pretty conservative and backing down extra early compared to EGT's. It kinda bugged me, not being able to tune that part out. Now I have custom tunes w/ adjustable power on the fly w/o backdown which is OK, my right foot does that

On a Powerstroke? What have I done????? I thought the Attitudes were only for Cummins... ****! But the pcm and chip allowed that? Mine recognizes both as additional software and wont do it. Unless the Edge re-progams my pcm so that my TS is "stock" and goes off of that... I don't want to mess anyhing up so I just custom tuned my Edge and left it like that. THANKS a ton man
