trying to get it started

i got my truck home last weekend on a trailer and immediatly started to try and get it running. the previous owner put new cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires, coil, alternator. which is good saves me some cash but the only way i could get it to run was by pouring gas in the carb. i pulled the filter off and there was no sign of fuel. is there a way of testing a mechanical pump? or should i pull the tank and check the fuel pick up first? the truck is a 1978 f250 with a 400 that has a holley intake and an edelbrock 4bbl carb and some old headers on it. thanks, tim

Yes
The pickup filters disintegrate after many years. The gas could be bad.
The lines could be impassable because of rust/resin.
No reason to get it running and not have a good fuel source.
Good luck, I had to do all the above but it was worth it.

Dumb question, how much fuel is in the tank?
Yes, X2 check the tank. Also check all the rubber fuel lines in the run from the tank to the pump. They get hard and crack allowing the pump to suck air.

Another dumb question: after you do get it running by fueling the carb does it stay running? How long until it sputters and dies?

i took out both tanks today and got quite the surprise both are junk they have holes in them. not only that but the fuel lines for both are completely rusted out and the front tank has a rubber line from it to the fuel pump. but wait there is more all the brake lines are gone and the shock mounts on the frame are rusted out. i think i am going to take the flat bed and the running gear- engine transmission transfer case and front and rear axels and use them in my 83 f350. probably scrap the rest. it has apparently sat in the weeds for too long.

no smog problems here.

i bought the truck off a friend for $350 so i wasn't going to get real picky. plus it was in weeds up to my chin. i figured it was worth that for scrap if it was junk.
