Hey guys. I have a 75 F250 with a 390 in it. Lately it has been cutting out on me on the freeway. Anything over 45 mph. If I give it gas to go it just wants to die unless I let off the pedal then its ok. Now it won't run at all. I pulled the fuel line off the front of the carburator and when I crank the motor over on a little bit of fuel spurts out of the line occastionally. Not very much at all. Is this a bad pump do you think?? thanks in advance.
I'd start with checking or replacing the fuel filter. You should have 1 by the carb and you MAY also have one by the tank. Start with the simple stuff. I had run my truck out of gas 2 weeks ago. Got it going again and drove it for a while and all of a sudden it ran horrible and would barely idle. Some junk got into the line when the tank went dry. It caused all kinds of problems.
Check hose connections between metal lines at gas tank, and along frame where dual tank solenoid is installed (even if you only have rear tank) and at fuel pump. Cracks or pinhole leaks will cause fuel pump to pull air and cause intermittent flow.
I replaced the one by the carb already. A similar thing happend to me. I decided to see how low the gas guage would go one day and I do have a two tank truck. So I ran one takn completely dry then just switched over to the other tank. About 10 min after this happened I got on the freeway and that was the first time it happend to me. I helped it through it by giving it more gas and letting off and it stopped doing it. Now 2-3 weeks later it is doing it again and I have already replaced the filter by the carb and all the rubber hoses down around the switchover valve right under the driver side door. I am thinking pump.
Mine is doing the very same thing. I ran one tank dry before switching to the other tank, and it wasn't long before the truck started acting up. I can get mine to around 25 mph before it starts cutting out. I will start with the filters and then look into the fuel pump.
