Yep, I believe the rationale behind the 4.30 gears only being available on the V10 is that it is to make up for the lack of torque of the V10 compared to the PSDs, for those wanting/needing to tow heavy. So, if the OP is looking at diesels, then they are not going to find a diesel factory-equipped with 4.30 gears.

Having said that, it does seem to be true that Excursions with 3.73 gears far outnumber those with 4.30 gears (special order only?), so even finding a V10 factory-equipped with 4.30 gears, and in decent condition & for the right price may prove to be a challenge. If the OP finds an Excursion in great condition for a cheap price, it may prove to be easier/cheaper to just get that, and do the gear conversion themselves (especially if they only need 2WD, and therefore only 1 axle needs to upgraded).

The V10 pulls my 34' Airstream as though it isn't behind me..... no downshifting except on extreme grades. Even then I can syllable drive 60 MPH. 17000 combined weight gets me 11-12, 16 empty. I am a light footed slowpoke....
You must live somewhere that is very flat. There is nothing but hills and mountains here and I can only get about 7.5 -8.5 mpg while towing my travel trailer. I only get 10-11 empty and I'm not heavy in the foot.

I had to look around for a while until I found an Ex with factory 4.30 gears and it happened to come with second row captain chairs which I wanted also.

I have the v10 with 4:30 gears, I get 10mpg everyday. I get around 7 pulling my 10,000 lb travel trailer. I would kill to get that good of mileage!! Ive got to say, the v10 with 4:30's can push or pull just about anything!!

I have to agree with the two previous posts. I tow about 18,000 combined. I hit 9.5 mpg once. Usually I am between 7.5-8.4 mpg towing.

I have a hard time getting 11mpg not towing. I don't buy 11-12 mpg towing 17,000 combined
