The consensus seems to be that the 5100's are prettier, aren't yellow and blue but have a coated metal finish, are longer to suit lifted or leveled trucks, and might be valved a little softer. The HD/4600 are a powder coated yellow/blue finish, are for stock height trucks, and may be valved a little stiffer to suit guys who tow heavy. Most people who tow heavy tend to run stock height trucks. Internally they are identical except for the valve shims, from what I have tried to learn. I just ordered a set of the HD/4600 and a 5100 series steering damper.
The valve shims open and let oil pass to provide dampening. It sounds like the 5100 series is more for perfomance, if that is what your looking for. I put the 4600 series(yellow and blue) on the front of my truck about 3 months ago. I only have about 1k miles on them so far, but they work great. For the money I realy like them.
You would be the real test because you use your truck so much. I don't know how they would hold up after 200k miles, but for the money I would get the 4600 series. Were you thinking of getting all four?
Yes,,, I'm gonna do the front ASAP,,, then the backs prob next week.
Here's a coupe pics
This is the backs
This is the fronts
Oreillys can get em,,, they're more expensive than online,,, but I could warranty them out every year or so very easily if I buy them there. What do u guys think???? It's about $450 for all 5. That's almost too much tho.
I would get the HD's for $300 free shipping (Shock Warehouse, for example). They last a long time. I have some on my race car that are 35 years old and still work perfectly, mind you they are a different model shock...
Clear coat & maybe some clear plastic shrink wrap over them would help preserve their appearance. I tow once in awhile, not enough to speak on the ride with them.
