Distributor install

Most of you probably saw a thread "Duraspark or Pertronix" So now that I finally have found a weekend that either isn't raining or im not busy I decided to try to gt my HEI dizzy into the truck. I can get the rotor to line up with the marks I made and drop in most of the way except the last 1/4 - 1/2" The only thing I can figure is that the oil pump drive shaft is not lined up, in terms of orientation, to the bottom of the dizzy. My only thought is to turn the oil pump driveshaft with a nutdriver. Anyone got any ideas? thanks corey

Hook a remote starter button up to the solenoid and bump it while turning back and forth on the distributor with a little downforce. Then bump the motor back around to TDC and check rotor to cap orientation.

remember- the distributor gear is curved. its not going to drop straight down. you need to put it down so that the rotor is pointing about about 1/2" counter-clockwise of where you need it to end up.

as it drops all the way down, the rotor will turn a bit, and hopefully end up right where you want it.

if it ends up slightly off...you're one tooth off. pull it out and try again.

I know its meshing ok with the other gear, as far as I can tell its just the oil pump driveshaft that is not orientated correctly. The only thing I can think of is to rotate the oilpump drive shaft. The old distributor had the same issue and would not drop straight in. I guess it would make sense that I could be a couple teeth off of where it was. The rotor of the new distributor is lining up pretty close (1/8")with my marks.

Bumping the motor over will turn the dist and line up the oil pump driveshaft.

I just purchased a CRT Performance Dizzy from eBay, so we'll how it goes for me.

One of the videos that I am using to help my reference with the install is the following, which may help with your install too, hopefully:

I've done it both ways and generally I like to used a nut driver to turn the oil pump a little, usually takes 2-3 tries.

easiest way as the timing stays set, just need about 1/16 a turn to get things to work out usually. Once they are close enough the dist will turn the pump on the way down.

The biggest obstacle I encountered was the o ring on the new distributor I ended up hose clamping and chilling the distributor and then setting it in place and using the distributor hold down and tightening and pushing down on the top of the distributor until it went "klunk" and dropped down into place. The cap on my distributor had no #1 marked on it so i referred to the old cap since the distributor were both positioned in the same orientation in regard to timing. Just make sure, if you need to in your application, to eliminate the pink resistor wire.
