Hello. Need some help here. I recently had to change my p/s pump because the plastic nipple on the back of the reservoir broke while trying to repair a fluid leak. Replaced the pump with a rebuilt Motorcraft pump from RockAuto and filled it with Type F auto trans fluid. The problem I'm having now is the steering feels really stiff whenever the truck is at a complete stop, as if it has no power assist. It was not this difficult to turn with the old pump. Giving the engine more throttle doesn't seem to help. If you are rolling even slightly it seems OK, just whenever not moving. New pump doesn't seem to be making any weird noises. I have tried to bleed the system by turning the wheel back and forth, front wheels on and off the ground, engine off and on. Anyone possibly know what is wrong or what I'm missing here? Truck is a 1995 Ranger with 2.3L 2wd. Thanks.
Turned out to be a bad power steering pump. Took the defective one off and sent it back to RockAuto. They sent me another one. Put it on, this time though I bled the system by turning the pump pulley by hand for a few minutes to get the majority of the air out and topped off fluid as necessary. Then lifted the front wheels off the ground and started the engine, turned the wheels back and forth several times. Pump is very quiet and has a lot more power assist to the system. I guess even a rebuilt Motorcraft part can have problems out of the box.
