76' power steering
I have a problem with my power steering on my 76' F-250. I rebuilt the engine and everything under the hood is new. I bought a new power steering pump. I flushed the system with new fluid and replaced the lines. When I got the engine running the pump worked for a few minutes then quit. Got a replacement pump and it worked for a few minutes then quit also. The system was working great before the engine broke. I've been driving it, but it's tough without the power steering.
What do I need to look for?

Ford ps pumps seem to be noisier than GM Saginaw pumps. My rebuilt Ford pump makes a fairly loud whining sound that became more quiet after running a few days. Is your pump also making a noise? If it is quiet, you might have air in the system. Did you flush the system when you replaced the pump? Is your return (low pressure) hose plugged?

The pump makes no noise. All the lines are new and the system has been flushed twice. I took the return line off the pump and ran the engine. There is a small flow of fluid coming out. Even when I rev the engine and turn the wheels. Remember this is the second pump in a row that was installed. I was told that there is a bypass valve in the steering box. And it could be stuck. If so sould'nt the fluid be shooting out the reture line?
