I owned a ( 7.3 )excursion few years back and I want to get another one . it got totaled out when some moron made a U turn in front of me . so I'm just looking for some opinions or suggestions . do I go for another 7.3 or the 6.0 ?
I never drove a 6.0 before or a V 10 . I'm assuming the 7.3 will get better MPGs over the 6.0 or a gasser
This is all my opinion so don't tear me apart. I am talking about stock trucks.

I have owned both a 7.3 and a V10. The V10 was great and powerful but the only complaint I had about it when towing was how much fuel it drank! The 7.3 will see about 18.1 mpg hand calculated only highway. Avg I would say 15 with my Ex. The V10 got about 9 avg and 14 highway. The 6.0 I have read that it does get better fuel mileage than the others. As for how reliable they are they are all pretty much solid motors if they were maintained properly. Don't be scared off by the typical 6.0 horror stories, they are strong engines. As with anything used there is risks involved with buying no matter if its a V10 or a 6.0. Its the chance you take trusting the PO or the dealer. Unless there is paperwork for any work completed I usually walk away. The 6.0 has issues but it all depends on how it was driven and maintained. I know of a 2004 Ex with 450,000 miles on it, bone stock but the owner is OCD about maintenance and its paid off! The 7.3 is a great motor but we all need to face the fact the newest 7.3 is just shy of 10 years old. The V10's in the Ex are getting up there also and sooner or later things will wear out. If you had a 7.3 and liked it there's no harm in getting another one, low mileage 7.3 excursions are still out there but I feel they are way overpriced because of the 7.3. That being said you can get a great deal on a 6.0 ex that may need some work for way less than a 7.3. I would go in the 6.0 section and read on the motors and what issues are common. Do your research and If you are unsure about anything take it to a diesel shop or the ford dealer for an inspection. Even if it costs 100.00 that's cheap compared to potentially overspending for a truck needing work. When looking at any 6.0 an oasis report is key which most ford dealers will run for you. Im not bashing my 7.3 but im just being realistic. The V10 Ex is also out there with plenty of power to pull whatever you need. The only downside to the V10 IMO is the fuel mileage but your buying a #8500 SUV! Maintenance is much less on the V10 and most parts are readily available. If you want a diesel get one, but consider the practicality of the truck , Diesels do not like to sit or be driven short distances. Oh, Welcome to FTE!
thanks for the input and the welcome. I had an FTE account when I had my excursion . I was getting low 20s with my 7.3 Excursion , but i put the MBRP 4 inch exhaust on and the afe cold air intake . I figured the 7.3 would get better MPG over the 6.0 mainly due to the weight of the truck. and I have read about those 6.0 horror stories a while ago , more recently I was browsing and started reading a thread about bullet proofing the 6.0 with some mods . have to find it again and finish reading it . I don't tow often . maybe motorcycles or quads on a trailer. or maybe once in a blue a heavy trailer to tow a car . I think I want my 7.3 back !
You can get a really nice V10 for under 10k with around 100-150k miles on it. Thats not alot for that motor if it was taken care of. The V10 would pull what you described easliy. I would do the V10 if your just looking for a driver with an ocassional tow. Thats why I got mine, and although it drinks gas, I like it. To put in perspective on fuel mileage. I drove about 300 miles to get my X. I traded my 2010 Dodge Hemi 4x4 CC for it. I got about 15 mpg on the overhead driving to get it. On the way home in the X going the same speeds I hand calculated 14.4 mpg. Not bad! Especially for the 8500 lbs!
