7.3 or V10 Excursion

I now have 2003 Ex with a 6.0 PSD 115k on the clock and I am not to happy with it. I have been having some of the 6.0 issues, I would like to get either a 7.3 or a V10 but can not decied wich one to get. The 7.3 make more power and gets better mpg but the initial cost is more, and they are but impossible to find. Would just like to get some opinions.

FWIW, the 7.3 makes more peak torque than V10 but only produces 250hp. 60 less than the V10.

Get a V10, it's cheap, reliable, quieter, easier and cheaper to maintain, easy to find, tows well & gets good mileage all things considered.

I had the V10 ('99 F350). And now have the 7.3. Come to find out, the '99 V10 was not a good year. So it's not really fair to compare. BUT! The V10 got 8 - 10 MPG pulling our camper and maybe 12+ unloaded. The 7.3 consistantly averages 15+MPG with the same driving conditions.
Diesels cost more to buy, fuel is more, shear power is more, cost of repairs is more, seems to need more repairs . . . sort and long of it; If I had to do it again, I would probably shop for a stout V10. The extra cost of buying and maintaining the diesel buys a lot of gas (which will always be cheaper).

I have and am happy with my V10. If I drove more and pulled or carried any serious weight, I might consider the diesel. But have no issues with the V10. Strong and reliable motor.

My landlords have an EX V10 limited. They love the room for the family and the power to pull their toys. They claim they make 13mpg towing on the interstate. Hard to believe because he and her both have lead feet, but that is what they claim. My last tank was 12.5mpg actual just bopping around town and some interstate.

If the 7.3L has 3.73 gears then it has less rear wheel torque than the V10 with 4.3 gears. At least that's my understanding. From what I hear (have a friend that had a 7.3L) they get good mileage and are easy to tweak with chips.

I would assume you could get a newer, lower milage V10 for the same $$ as an older 7.3. Unless I towed heavy a lot or in the mountains I think I would want the newer vehicle. Tough choice, I have a v10 in a 250 and I love it not sure I would feel the same about a 6.0.

Yeah that is a a very good looking one. I have a 3 yr old shepard, I hope to be putting him through the paces soon, not sure yet though.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I think I have found a Dark green 03 7.3 with low miles I might get.

I have a 97 PSD 4x4 F250 and considering an 2wd Excursion V10 as a replacement. We need a bit more comfort while towing a RV Trailer.
What is the deal with the spark plugs being spit out? I heard that was on 2000 and 2001, is that true? How can I tell if the repair has been done..
I can get a nice excurions with around 100,000 miles on it for not much more than the selling price of my 97 PSD. Seems like it makes sense.
