Hey guys, I know this is a 7.3 forum, but none of the others are answering my questions. I have an F250 7.3 PSD and I'm looking at Excursions. Yes, i'd love to find a 7.3l in good shape, but seem to find more 6.0's and V10's...
Know plenty about the 7.3, very little on the 6.0 and nothing on the V10.. What can I expect in engine life and fuel use with the other engines / transmissions..
Just need to make an informed decision,, Thanks everyone.
Can't speak to engine life on either the 6.0L or V10.
However, I had a V10 Excursion for nearly two years before selling it to get another Excursino with the 7.3L, which I currently own. Around town, you can expect 8.0-8.5 mpg on the V10. It runs well, accelerates well, but I didn't tow with it either. On the higway, the V10 can give you upwards of 13.8-14.5 mpg. All of my mileage numbers are from regular hand-calculations where I filled the tank until I could see the fuel and then used my mileage numbers to determine the accurate miles/gallon. I NEVER used the overheard mileage values because they were always off when I compared them.
On the 7.3L, I have been running around 14 in town and as high as 17.5 on the highway (traveling 80 mph with 8 people, but again, not towing).
Hope this gives you a little more of the info you're wanting.
Did you ask up in the Excursion section? What are your driving habits? The V10 will get terrible mileage. The 6.0 has a great transmission, but if it's not driven enough and the right way is prone to have EGR and VGT issues. Also if chipped, the 6.0 needs more (and more expensive) supporting mods to keep from blowing it up.
Well, that tells me more than I knew.. I live in an area with a lot of stock tailer and boat pulling. Everyone agrees on the 7.3, but becomes mixed on the 6.0. All I hear about the 6.0 is the HPOP always going out. My brother had two 6.0's that were POS's, always breaking down. He went back to a 7.3..
My 7.3 gets about the same mileage as yours, but I can hit around 18.5-19 mpg if I can set the cruise at 83 and let it run..(so long as I can keep the Troopers off my tail)
Anyway, I will be pulling an Excursion. (boat for sure and whatever else)...I just want an engine that's has some longevity and power.
Yes, I did ask in the Ex section, with no answers...
Driving Habits: I don't hot rod em, but I don't drive like a blue hair either... I'm not afraid to put my foot in one with a trailer or boat on behind. Pulling trailers, I will run the speed limit and maybe then some, so long as it doesn't require overworking the engine, turbo, trans, etc. Not into jackrabbit starts from stop signals either. And I'm a maintenance fanatic, I take exceptional care of my vehicles.
I was told the early 6.0's were junk, but got better.. (is that fact or fiction) I've never heard anything good about V10's...
The later 6.0's got better, but EGR's and variable vanes in the turbo don't like short trips or sitting around for a long time. You can delete the EGR issue, but the 6.0 doesn't make a good parking lot queen.
I've read about some issues with V-10 plugs, but it's got plenty of power (just missing the torque down low like a diesel) and it get's bad mileage.

It's hard to argue that the 7.3 has proven that it's a reliable powerplant over the 6.0.
My problem is locating, and affording in some cases, a 7.3.. lot's of 6.0's and V10's around. The Ex will be driven almost daily by my wife or I. And, the 7.3's are easy to work on...
I've pretty much told you what I know. It has to do with the variable, ie moving parts and them sticking from deposits or something if they're not exercised enough. Might be something they fixed in the later years. I'm not sure.
If it will be a regular driver that gets up to and rides at full operating temps for a while, this probably won't be an issue. If you tow 3 times a year with a couple of dozen trips around the corner to 7-11 in between, I'd be concerned.
