Hey gang, I have a 66 f100 that I just dropped a nice 302 into and it runs like a raped ape. I have a single old school master cylinder and was wondering if I put a power booster , vac line and a duel master cyl and proportioning valve on it,,,,, will I have power brakes? did I miss anything? it that rod that goes to the pedal to the master a different length from the old non power single? this thing is hard to stop and I am a poor boy just wanting a cool safe truck. Please dont give me a link to summit or brembo with a $2000 disc upgrade kit, I am old school and like the junkyard donar trucks.Isnt that what it is all about? Thats what our Dads would have done right? Sorry if I offended anyone.............Now how about some advice Rodders!!!!
I added power to my 4 wheel drums by adding the booster, firewall mounting brackets, installing a vacume hose from the manifold to the booster, and extending the wiring for the brake light switch.
Thats all you need to add power to your current system.
In the future Im adding discs off my 75 donor truck, all I will need to do is swap out the single m/c for a dual and swap over the brake lines and porportioning valve.
you don't need to add a proportioning valve if you're sticking with 4-wheel drums.
otherwise, you're on the money.
when you buy the new dual-reservoir MC, make sure you get one designed for 4-wheel power drums. if you have trouble fiding one, try asking for one for a '69 Mustang- that car had a lot of brake configurations available.
i missed the part where you said you're adding discs in the future.
that complicates things-
a disc/drum MC is not the same as a drum/drum.
if you're sticking with drums *for now*, you'll need a drum/drum MC. otherwise you're going to run into trouble (the disc/drum MC will not have a residual valve for the front brakes).
The OP asked what he needed to do to make his manual brakes power brakes. I answered him.
In my case I rebuilt my drum brakes and added a booster. My m/c and brake hardware was shot, so I had no brakes.
In the future Im pulling the discs off my 75 parts truck and installing them on my 66. I am reusing my booster and rear drums, otherwise Im replacing everything.
No complications here, Im just doing it in two steps instead of one step.
