My F-150, (see signiture), makes a real heavy pingin noise when ever I'm going about 60 to 70 on the freway in 3rd gear and doese it at 65 when pulling a horse trailer in 3rd gear. I exclusivly use Chevron gas. Oh and also it stoped making the noise after about 15 miles. So what do you guys think Put some techron concentrate in or is it mechanical.
No its not lifter noise because when it revs up in 1st or secong it dosnt make the noise just when its going in third at a high speed under a load. It will also make the noise when your floor it and right at the point it shifts from third fourth. It only seems to do it when you really step on it in third but dosent when you dont floor it all the way through third.
I see your running a K&N air filter. It is possible that your MAF
sensor has been contaminated with oil, which will cause a
lean condition. Try cleaning your MAF, and if you want my
opinion, throw that K&N filter in the trash......The K&N will
also let dirt into your intake that will be caught with the OEM
paper filter.

The position of the distributor isn't electronically controlled . It can be rotated just like a carb engine's. But I'd advise keeping it and everything else set to factory spec according to the instructions on the emissions sticker in the engine compartment.
