problem starting

Hi again. I got great help with my electrical problem. What my question is tonight is about the starter on my 460 engine. I have had an ongoing hot start problem. The starter often does not spin the engine fast enough. It "lugs."

Is this problem part of life with a 1976 460?

If your starter itself isn't the culprit then it could be a poor engine to body ground or a corroded or damaged starter lead. The engine to body ground is a pretty likely culprit. One of the POs of my truck was into redundancy and had a heavy gauge starter wire grounding the engine to the frame in addition to the smaller factory 10ga. engine to firewall ground.

Another possibility is that your timing is too far advanced.

Or if the timing isn't too far advanced it could be carbon build-up. Either making hot spots in the combustion chamber or build-up behind the rings creating pressure on the cylinder walls.

problem starting

I have had the same problem caused by the starter itself. It had been damaged because of its proximity to my headers. If you have headers, this could be the issue. There are lots of posts on this.
