Just replaced the starter motor for my '78 f150 (460 with auto trans) and encountered some fit issues. While the starter fit perfectly, it seems that the starter gear sits about 1/8" too far into the bell housing. Starting the engine results in noise that you'd think was the starter failing to disengage, but shimming the starter with a couple of washers solves the problem.
There is a spacer plate between the engine and transmission bell housing but I'm wondering if that's not the correct thickness. Of course, I neglected to the compare the the new and old starters as I handed over my core immediately. Doh!
At the moment I'm thinking of just fabricating a proper shim for the starter using sheet metal (so gunk can't get into the bell housing since the starter doesn't sit flush with it right now). But this isn't really the best (correct) fix.
