So I've got a Freshly rebuilt 79 351m straight up timing .515 Oregon cam roller rockers hooker headers anyway mildly built. We're trying to start her for the first time and she spits fuel out of the mains when we try and crank her with some gas.l is it timing or stuck float???? Or to much fuel pressure....? I'm running a stock fuel pump I'm pretty sure anyway.. Ive checked the firing order a millin times.. Idk. We checked the I thermal timing again a week or so ago and she did t jump a tooth or two. Any suggestions?
This may seem stupid (because I’ve done it) but is your timing chain of the kind that has the ability to be advanced or retarded? If it is, are you sure the correct keyway was lined up with the correct mark on the timing chain?
Did you turn the motor over 180 deg after installing the timing chain? When the chain is installed with the two marks (crank gear at 12 o'clock and cam gear at 6 o'clock) this is actually TDC for #6 piston.
Ahhh really? The timing chan was already installed by we had to put a new cam n her... Idk I hope the internal timing isn't 180 out.. That would be a bummer.
Thats what I was wondering too " the mains ". If you line the dots up there is no way a cam can be 180* out, it doesn't work that way. Did you check for push rod length ? How much preload do you have in the lifters ? With all you have done to it the stock length pushrods probably will not work.
OK the carb is either stuck or the fuel pressure is too high. Pull it off and do some work with the seat or floats. Possibly a new carb is best at this time. Excess fuel easily works its way past the needle and seat when not perfect. Kits are available, which carb do you have? Sometimes the acceleration pump is the faulty guy. If it gives a full stream when used it is usually ok. U will need to pull the plugs crank the motor a few times and give each cylinder a couple squirts of motor oil, then crank it a few revs to relube the rings and pistons. Let the motor set for a few to help get rid of the flood of fuel thru evaporation. If U start it flooded it will not get too good a lube to the brake in of the rings right away and look for scorred pistons to hamper your fun. Depending on the flooding condition the motor is in, oil may be excessively dilluted also.
You got your primaries(mains in my part of the county or maybe just my fam) and you got your secondaries. There hydraulic lifters. Set to .00 lash then a half turn.... Roller rocker arms.. No I talked to the guys who made my cam. Definitely not pushrods. Although did have a bent one but that was my fault.. I'm going to take the front cover off today. I rebuilt the carb. It's a 1406 edelbrock. I can't just prime the engine? That's all I've done with my 4bangers.
Foryota not long ago you started a thread titled THIS FORUM IS USELESS YUPP. And now you want help well I agree you need help from the funny farm you are "hard case"
lash wrong if you dont have compression. static time the engine 5btdc..check to be sure you are at TDC when the marks line up? do you have spark?. when she fires don't run her more than 5min...then check water..and restart ...the rings will get hot with out the lube you washed out of the rings with all the gas...keep revs low ect...
roller rocker need attention. Before install a rocker you should paint the tip of the valve then install rocker and make a full rotation. Remove the rocker and look where is your wear on the tip of the valve. it should be center. If not you need a push-rod lenght adjuster to find your good lenght. Just did mine couple month ago.
