hey guys I'm replacing my flywheel and starter on my 2000 5.4 due to the known grinding problem.
anyways, I was trying to save a few bucks by just replacing the Bendix.
I've looked and searched everywhere for it with no luck
if anyone knows where to buy one from please point me in the right direction please.
You used to be able to get them at your local parts store. I checked Azone and Napa online and neither offer it. Go figure.
Sorry, unless you have a rebuilder in your area(that also does alternators), then likely you will have to replace the whole starter. We have a couple small shops in my area.
I don't know where you live but, I just checked in my area.
O'Reillys and Bumper to Bumper list them. if you have time
you should be able to order one online.
They're more expensive than they used to be but, it sure
beats the price of a starter.

okay is there another name for bendix? I looked at those websites with no luck.
It is actually called the "starter solenoid". Just be advised that a lot of parts sources mistakenly call the starter relay a solenoid (which it is not).
"Bendix" is used as a generic term much like the usage of "Xerox" for a photocopier or "Jello" for flavored gelatin.
Starter Drive is the correct part name. If you can buy a starter for
$70, that's a great buy. The starter drives run around $35 - $45 depending on the brand.
I'd just change the whole starter. If the ring gear is wiped out the starter drive teeth are probably worn and a weak starter solenoid, battery or corroded wiring may have caused the drive to skip wear the ring gear. Only you know if the battery was an issue. Is the work involved changing the ring gear worth installing a partially repaired starter?
