I have an 85 F250 6.9l. I have new glow plugs but won't be able to put them in till the weekend. Will it hurt to use starting fluid in the mornings to get going. I don't want to do any damage.
Only if your current glow plugs are disabled. Any working plugs can ignite the ether and cause all sorts of trouble. You could disable them by unhooking the ground wire for the glow plug relay, by disconnecting the main power wire on the fender relay, or by unplugging the glow plugs themselves.
Another thought is that you don't want to use too much, just a whiff or two should do it. Ideally you should have a helper spray or start. Spraying and then starting can let all the ether into one or two cylinders.
Thanks Adam.
Have you ever heard of using WD40 instead of starting fluid? My neighbor said to try that as it would be easier on the engine. I sure hope to be able to get the new GP's in this weekend!
WD-40 does not work for me, not unless you remove the intake hat or something and are able to spray a TON in the engine. Been ether starting my truck for a couple years now just fine. Like these guys said, just make sure your GPs are not working.
I think your supposed to use a little wd-40 if you have a situation that requires lots of ether to keep from drying the cylinders out. Most starting fluids contain a lube though so depends on what your spraying.
Back when (about 3 yrs ago) I replaced all glow plugs and set up a manual system via a momentary switch. But after I got started I realized I needed to fabricate a new glow plug wiring harness. Well that took me several days because I could only work on it after I made a trip. So, I ended up using ether for about 3 weeks until I could finally tackle the whole job.
I would spray ether for 2 seconds into the nose on the breather. She fired right up every morning. After she was warm...she didn't need the ether to start. Moral of the story...As far as I know...no damage was done and since using the manual glow plug switch I am still on the same set of ZD-1A's...I don't know how long they will last before I need new ones...
