How to replace headlight light switch on '96 Bronco
My low beams don't work and nothing else seems wrong. All the fuses look good, so based on my research, I assume the headlight switch needs to be replaced. Not sure the best way to remove the front dash panel and headlight ****. Thanks.
Do the high-beams work? If they do, the problem is more likely to be in the multi-function stalk/switch on the column. (And you won't find a headlamp fuse in any car or truck built after about 1950). The circuit is protected by a thermal circuit breaker built into the headlamp switch. It protects BOTH high and low beam circuits so if one set works and the other doesn't, its more likely to be in the high-low switching portion of the circuit.
You will have to remove the plastic shell around the column to access the hardware that holds the stalk in place. There are a handful of Philips screws that run up from the bottom to hold the upper and lower half of the column surround together. I've got photos of a "naked" column somewhere. I'll see if I can dig them up. In the meantime, I would suggest looking around here for a parts explosion drawing of the column.
It can actually be serviced, no need to replace it, Steve83 has a very detailed write-up with images about the whole procedure, do a good search and you should find it.
I will refrain from comment on the idea of "servicing" an 18 year-old assembly constructed almost entirely of plastic. Best of luck if the decision is to "service" the existing assembly.
It isn't the plastic what fails in those, it's sulfatation and oxidation of the contacts. You should look into it to, you'll find some interesting info.
