I just got "laid off" Friday (a standard in the DFW electronics career routine..). I too may be selling some rare toys soon. I can only hope that they bring "crazy" money.
The only problem with selling parts when you need the money is everyone is needing money. There are some great deals out there if you have the money. The last couple of times I've put stuff on eBay I got only a nibble or two, back 4-5 years the stuff would have had a bidding war going over them. Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to wait another four years for my stuff to become valuable again.
The particular Harley model I have is not supported by dealers any more (FXR's) and there's a guy in Cal. who specializes in them. His prices are out of this world, but he sells them. If you need it, and want it right away, not a year later when one pops up cheap somewhere, what ya gonna do?
There's a Buick guy in Florida who sells on the 'Bay. His prices are always in the stratosphere but like Ross said, he has the part you need and if you want it now or if it's the one part you need to finish your project that's been sitting in the garage for the last ten years you might go for it. Even though his prices are considered totally outrageous by all the Buick guys he does sell. His items might soak on the 'Bay for a year or more but eventually someone will buy them. My theory is he probably tends to sell to professional restorers who restore cars for other people. These guys are not going to have a car sitting in their shop taking up valuable space and delaying getting paid to complete a project just waiting for one or two parts. Also, the people they're doing the cars for really don't care if they pay twice as much for a $200 item since they are already paying someone $25K to restore their car.
The funny thing is there's a guy in Minnesota who deals in the same parts and sells parts at a very reasonable price. He is as well known as the guy in Florida, in fact he told me he a while back that the guy from Florida came up and bought over $5K in parts from him and when back home and posted all of the parts on the 'Bay for 2-3 times what he paid. The Minnesota guy told me he didn't care, he got what he wanted for his stuff.
