doing fuel filter change now, and loosened yellow **** to drain filter and an hour later its still draining. Already several gallons. Is this normal? I'm parked on level ground.

I did the same thing on my very first filter replacement and finally stopped after about a gallon drained. I usually turn the filter housing about two - three turns and then start draining using the yellow drain plug. If no air gets inside filter housing it will continue to drain from the tank, so when I turn the housing I usually hear a sucking sound and that is when I stop and then start draining. I usually get a about a 1/2 quart drained.
I hate replacing the fuel filter, such a messy job.
You need to just remove the filter housing and it will quit. It will run forever if just open yellow ****.
what about engine mounted filter? got old out, but new one yellow out is on left, whereas on OE was on right side. Thus internal connections doesnt fit.

If this is the first fuel filter change since the factory build, the engine mounted fuel filter from the factory will have three ports on it (one port is plugged and used at the factory) whereas the replacement filter will have two.
The hoses and the fittings on the filter should match. If they do not, then I am guessing it is an aftermarket filter and not a Ford replacement part, which sounds like it is the wrong filter.

It worked. very confusing design change from Ford, but now I know what to do. The 3 hour job, really will take 20 minutes next time.
On my first filter change I did the same thing, I drained about 3 gallons of fuel out. What I did was not open the valve far enough. You need to be able to clearly see the whole o-ring on the drain plug. You will also be able to hear a lot off air going back in when it is open far enough. I first time I left it unattended for the drain, I figured I would just come back after eating and it would be good to go....nope. But luckily I had a large enough container it wasn't all over the floor. On the second time I just turned the drain plug all the way out, not just to where you see the oring, but all the way out, and it took maybe 10 to 15 seconds to get all but the last few drips out.
I don't understand the water seperator. When I had my cummins in 2003, only the filter got changed after draining it which was easy location in engine. Was only the filter, nothing else. Then on my duramax I'm 2007, only the filter again with a small sub filter, which I guess was seoerator, but it went into filter housing with regular filter.
So why does ford have two? And why is the fuel filter not in engine like the older models.

Probably because the fuel pump runs at 30,000 PSI. So the presence of smallest amount of anything other than ultra-clean diesel fuel will cause...well lets just say it will cause "difficulties".
I changed my fuel filter in my driveway which is on about a 10 degree incline, I also did it with about 1/4 to 1/2 diesel fuel left in the tank. I drained exactly 32 oz of fuel out of the filter housing. First I completely removed the yellow drain stopper, then after fuel quit gushing out i removed the housing.
How much fuel did you have in the truck?

The fact that it keeps draining if you don't loosen the filter housing is not mentioned in video or owners manual.
