I purchased my 06 Super Duty diesel pickup in Arizona, new. Moved to South Dakota and have had issues with the truck warming up. Even in summer, have to warm up for 5-8 minutes before driving it and in winter, even with the block heater plugged in, takes about 30 min of idling to be able to drive without truck acting like its missing. Is there a difference in thermostats used in vehicles purchased in different parts of the country? Im thinking my problem could be related to the termostat opening to soon, not allowing the coolant to heat up properly. Any ideas?
I think it's likely that something is wrong other than the thermostat. You should be able to start your truck up in 10° weather after sitting for weeks and drive down the road without it running badly. Sounds to me like you're having injector stiction, but I'm certainly not the expert.
I'm going to send this one down to the 6.0L Powerstroke forum.
You also and first need to check the ficm voltage key on, key on cranking and key on running. Should never be below 47 volts. What type of oil and filters are you running. Only OEM filters for the fuel and oil. When cold try 5w40 oil. I run it year around. The truck likes it.
While thermostats are the same you may need to have your truck pcm recalibrated to the different environment it is living/working in. Thats a pretty big jump in both operateing temps and altitude depending on where in s.dakota.
