Memorial Weekend Plans?

My relatives have participated in every war the US has fought in, minus the Span. Amer. War, if you can call it one. As far as the Civil War goes, we wore blue and gray. My relatives in Arkansas are still mad about losing the war, don't know why though. Yeah, maybe we all should do a little more on Memorial Day, its just that I am too tired and the work is beginning to pile up. I am a history buff, so I am well aware of the sacrifices that these men have paid for in blood. I am proud to be an American because of that.

Memorial Weekend Plans?

Personally I think about and thank the countless number of veterans, that gave all so the rest of us can live in freedom, every day. As far as I know every man in my family served this contry at one time. The most recent is my son. He enlisted in the navy a couple of months ago. He graduates High School this coming Thursday. I am very proud of him for making this choice. I served 6 years in the Arnmy as did my Uncle. My Father and Grandfather both were in the Air Force.
Sorry if I left out the reason for this weekend, I figured everyone would know what this holiday was for.

Memorial Weekend Plans?

I actually got reminded of what Memorial Day means last week when I visited The Traveling Wall (a/k/a the "Vietnam Wall Experience") which made a somewhat surprise visit to my city on its way up to Massachusetts. They set up the Wall replica in a park that is right by my house, so of course I decided to give it a visit, and I gotta tell you, I was blown away. I mean it. It was something I was not ready for in terms of emotional impact. Firstly, there is the wall itself with all the names. Then there are the tributes and cards and thank yous left by so many people. Then you have the family and friends of the deceased having their own private moments.....you can see that the pain has not left them completely even after all these years. Finally, you have all the other veterans from all the different wars and conflicts coming to pay their respects. Seriously, I was almost moved to tears, it was that kind of situation. I'm now making it a point to go to D.C. just to see the real Wall.

Should the Traveling Wall come to your parts, I highly recommend you take a few minutes and pay a visit.

Memorial Weekend Plans?

I install computer software for a living, and unfortunately have to support a live this weekend. It could mean no work, it could mean hours of work. I don't really know yet. As far as what the holiday is and what it stands for, the only thing that I have to say about it is a very sincere thanks to all of the vets in this country that have been through all kinds of hell so that I won't have to. I really do appreciate your sacrifices.

Matt

As for me, I'm going to get my M151 out of storage and drive it to the county cemetary and help with the services honoring those who gave all for us. I'm not a vet but my father is and I feel like that is the least I can do. He and I have been doing this for many years and will for as long as I am able. We help with the flag service and the live fire salutes. I will be carrying my Colt AR15 SP1 (civilian version of the VietNam era M16) and dad will be carrying his M1 garand that he served with in WW2. He will be driving his restored GPW. Maybe we should all take a moment to commemorate what the day stands for.
Uh, I don't think I need to be ashamed of myself for anything I've done in my life. You don't know me nor anyone else on this forum so you really don't have any right at all to criticize anyone. Not that I have to justify myself to you but, myself, my father, both my grandfathers, and various aunts and uncles have served in the military. Not to mention that I work for the federal government and deal with military members, active duty and retired, 40 hours a week.

Thanks but no thanks for your info on how to celebrate Memorial Day.

I am headed up to the rifle range in seven minutes to pay my respects to paper and lead and Don Allen may he rest in piece. I just got a dakota rifle and now I gotta shoot it.

There's always some hot head on this forum that cannot take any heat. My post was only to illustrate that there were 10 responses to the original question and none of them were aimed at celebrating the weekend for what it was originally intended. Our veterans need to be thanked every day, as one poster stated, but they need to have one day that is theirs and theirs alone.

Willie, you need to lighten up a little and maybe grow up, too. Maybe the 40 hours a week you spend working with the military personel is enough for you to show your respect but it wouldn't hurt you to do a little on your own time and show some appreciation to those who fought for you to have a '40 hour a week' government job. It's obvious from your post, though, that you don't want to hear from someone who thinks that you aren't doing enough.

Yet again, you think you know more than others on this forum. If anyone has proven the need for maturity, that would be you. You totally missed the point of my post because my 40 hour a week job has nothing to do with it. It has to do with some nobody on a forum telling others that they're wrong just because they didn't mention "the real meaning of Memorial Day".

As for me growing up, spend 6 years in the military like I did, live my life as I have, and then come talk to me. You don't know a thing about maturity. You think I'm a "hothead" just because I don't agree with you. Now, who needs to grow up?

You want to start a flame war, do it via PM. Matter of fact, don't bother. You're not important enough and I don't have time for children in my life right now.

Well then, how do you recognize, celebrate, and/or participate on Memorial Day? My grandfather, a great uncle, and my father were in the army, and I am 17, and I go out every year with the American Legion and help them put flags on the graves of the fallen. Not everybody can be in the military for one reason or another. If you've had a bad day, I apologize, but don't take it out on someone who is being patriotic on such an important holiday.
