So when I order new bearings do I need to order for a specific block?

Negetive! This part is the only simple part. An FE block bearing is an FE block bearing they all use the same mains/rods does not matter what crank

I also recommend asking some questions in the FE engine forum of FTE.

Keep in mind there are a couple ways for an FE to become a 428. a 390 can be bored out enough to be a 428. There is also the 'true' 428 with the larger stroke crank 3.98", where the 390 crank has a stroke of 3.7..." there is also a 427(pretty much the same just was called so to differentiate i believe) also, but i cannot remember which one is made what way?

But none of this really matters unless your after a replacement crank. Sounds like all you might be doing is pulling the crank, having it polished and ordering the correct undersized bearings. i would expect to have to either use std size bearings(if it hasn't already been touched) and deal with lower oil pressure because of a larger clearance(while still might be in the spec. range) or have to get .010 undersized to compensate for turning of the crank.

Were it a "C" scratch mark it would denote a reinforced 428 block, used in the 428PI, 428CJ, and 428SCJ.

And the elusive 428 "S" scratch...

428 block, probably a 428. You measure from the crank centerline to the rod journal centerline.

Casting and other marks--beware, no guarantee this is 100% correct:

427 is an FE motor. Same bell pattern as the 428. NOTHING shared with the dead dog 351m/400, Nothing shared with the 385 series 460/429.

Bearings are the same, but you need to check the crank to see if it is turned, worn, or within stock spec.

I stole that pic as well. But it's been talked about quite a bit on Fordfe.com and 428cobrajet.com.

If your not sure what your doing on the lower end let your machine shop supply and assemble it. When I did my 428CJ the machine shop wanted $200 to assemble the lower end and thus warranty it. Cheap insurance in my opinion.
