Shadowrider, I had the assembly all together and marked it in two places to cut out 3". I used a bandsaw to cut it. Locked it to the table and made the first cut - cutting through the outer, inner tubes & shaft. After I cut the first section off, I used wood wedges to keep the two tubes and shaft lined up with each other and went ahead and made the second cut. After that, just take it apart and weld the parts. 3" sure makes a heck of a difference. I think Bill posted sometime back that some columns are different length so you might ask which ones are shorter and might work for you. Bill would know. I was lazy to go look for a shorter one and I had the tools to do it myself. If you do cut it, make sure you mark it all so you know how it fits back together.

I'm confused also...I thought I understood you to say a generator vehicle used different steering wheel than alternator vehicle...But in the above quote the 60/63 Falcon would NOT be a alternator vehicle, right??

Masked the p/s columns are shorter due to the longer p/s pump, unless you have a early Bendix pump, but not many of those left around.

I am swapping in the entire p/s setup from my 75 parts truck. The steering wheel should set pretty close to where my 66 non p/s column sits now.

Im just not comfortable having the wheel so close to me. I could shorten the whole works, but thats a lot of work in itself.

I thought the Mustang wheel was a bit shallower and smaller diameter and that would give me more "belly" room.

I will look into it in the next couple months, Im in no hurry.

If you want to use the mustang wheel or any other wheel that would not be so deep or smaller in dia Just use a portion from that veh shaft to attach to yours.

You could also use the other veh shaft and just put your lower flange on it. Simple task if you find the right wheel

shadowrider, they are shorter but I wanted more room than just back to the same stock position. Longer shaft/shorter column = back to stock position. By cutting mine, I get to keep my stock wheel and still get much better room. I remember a guy that took out 4" but he was also a big guy as well as tall.
Theres been other guys here on this forum that have cut sections from their column. I'll bet if ya post it, you might find someone that will do yours for ya. Of course for a price.

I don't know on what subjest this thread started but please forgive me if I hi-jacked it.

The OP wants to use a '65 Mustang steering wheel on his truck. There are two different types: 1965 Mustang before 8/23/1964 has a generator / 1965 Mustang from 8/23/1964 has an alternator.

Shadowrider: The P/S pump has nothing to do with the length of the steering column. What does make a difference: Manual vs P/S; Bendix P/S vs Ford/Saginaw P/S.

Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD / 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.

Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001 / 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350 / 1976/79 F100/150 4WD / 1977 F250 4WD from serial number Y20,001 / 1978/79 F250 4WD.

Yeah, bill explains it better. Forgot to mention Manual vs. P/S. I just take it that people understand what I'm thinking. Hell, i have trouble doing that myself...

Im going to roll the dice and see if I can make a 66 Mustang wheel work on my 66 F100.

My 66 turn signal cam is broke, my horn index is broke, my steering wheel and horn ring look like crap.

Im going to buy a 66 red repop wheel for $115 and the corresponding turn signal cam and see what I can do.
