I have a 2003 F250 SD with the Triton V10. Its got about 116K miles on it. Was used for 5th wheel long haul a couple times before I bought it unaware.
My transmission will rev up to about 4000rpm before shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and 3rd to 4th gear. It shifts really hard. I've had a minor diagnostic run on it and it didn't reveal much except a possible issue with the shifter cullenoids. Could it also be an issue with my overdrive? Any ideas?
It can't be an issue with your overdrive. Overdrive is fourth gear in your transmission. If you are having a problem shifting 2-3 overdrive isn't doing anything. It is during the 3-4 shift, because 4th gear IS overdrive.
It could be a problem with a solenoid, but shifting at 4000 RPM is normal in some situations. For example, if you have the accelerator pedal far enough towards the floor the computer is going to think you want to accelerate fast and will make the trans shift at high engine speed because that's how to go fast. If you are accelerating with the pedal maybe 1/4 of the way to the floor, a SLOWWWWW acceleration, and it shifts at 4000 RPM, then there is a problem.
When they ran a diagnostic did they record any codes from the computer? If so that would be a BIG help in diagnosing what's wrong.
Took it to O'Reilly's and the codes were P1714 ( I think ) but that it had to do with the Shift Solenoid. Either a bad connection/ground or that the solenoid needed replacing. The clerk suggested I check the lines and make sure nothing was cracked or disconnected.
While inexpensive to purchase, are the solenoid's fairly easy to replace?
Also, as far as the overdrive. Is it normal for Fords to automatically engage the OD when the engine is turned on? Because I have to manually push the button on the shifter column to turn it off. Also, at high speeds it will flash "OFF" even once the button has been pushed.

Overdrive is 4th gear in your truck. Yes, it is normal for your truck to use 4th gear. The overdrive does not "engage". 4th gear is after 3rd gear when you drive down the road. It is normal for your truck to shift 1-2-3-4. That is what is supposed to happen.
The blinking OD light is your transmission trying to communicate with you. A blinking OD light means that your transmission is having problems and is in need of an inspection and repair by a qualified transmission service technician.
