Showed friend my new to me 1995 F150 and he liked it, but said "heard those are easy to steal and are stolen all the time". I guess since no chip in key was part of his point. Great. I live in an okay neighborhood so not all that worried I guess. But, would it be worth the effort or easy enough to install some kind of fuel cutoff switch? Some kind of simple on-off switch that could be hidden under dashboard or seat?
People steal things just to steal things...not necessarily to reap $$. I've had cars stolen just to joy ride, run it out of gas, and leave it in the street. An 18 yr old truck, car, whatever, is a prime target.
Smart thieves are only played on TV.
Also, I've done the fuel pump cutoff on jeeps. I won't do it again simply because it becomes a hassel. I can't count how many times I'd forget about it and wonder why I have a no-start issue. Just put a club on it.
Trip the fuel cutoff switch behind the passenger lower kick panel and voila no start.
+1
Or you could pull the fuel control fuse. Or add a switch somewhere. If you add a switch in the ignition circuit make sure it's ain't the coil primary because then the PCM will get a RPM signal and start firing injectors. Without a spark, it'll flood + dilute your engine oil.
I don't know who'd want to steal an 18 year old truck. Typically people just break into them to steal whatever is in it. That little vent window could have used a better design. I can break into my own truck with a bucket handle in less than 10 seconds. Its nice when you lock yourself out of your own truck though.
Just run an extension cord to your truck. Cut the end off and wire it to the frame. Then throw it in the back. When you park it, plug it in. The tires will prevent it from grounding out, but when some potential thief grabs a hold of the door they'll get zapped!!!!
Not sure if this would work, nor would I actually try it. I would just get an old Billy Goat and have him guard my truck. They work for darn near nothing.
My 21 year-old truck sits in the driveway, unlocked. Often I leave the keys in the ignition switch. I suspect the odds are higher of me getting hit by an asteroid than my truck stolen.
Depends on where you live. In the more southern states, OBS and Super Duty trucks are prime targets for the Mexican drug runners. Easy to break into, easy to break the ignition, easy hot wire.

Yup, agreed... no shortage of mexicans here.
Edit: Just remember, if someone wants it bad enough, and has access to a tow truck, it's gone.
