It's a punch out for the crank rod to spin the crank by hand. Keep it there and as-is.
There should also be two similar punch outs on the grille panels, one on each. The punch outs are for the grille guard brackets.

Denny, that indent is still a mystery. No one seems to know what purpose it serves. Maybe it's just to work-harden the metal??? Maybe it was designed for something, but then that something didn't make it into production?? Who knows....????

Mystery solved . Was informed that the indent was for the engine driven air compressor clearance on the larger trucks equipped wth air brakes .Makes sense to me . Some day while in the bone yard will check .
